Why would you choose to hire me to assist your child in ACT/SAT Preparation? I have many years’ experience working with high schoolers to raise entrance exam scores; I’ve taught for a couple of the major prep franchises, as well as developing my own prep classes through UWM and Lakeland College, and I’ve discovered that the ‘businesses’ use a cookie-cutter approach:
- Day 1: explanation of module; practice work; test practice;
- Day 2: repeat;
- Day 3: repeat . . . . .
then, at the end of the (usually) 6 week sessions, your child takes another Practice SAT or Practice ACT or whatever Practice exam they’ve been studying for (ASVAB, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, etc). If your child misses a practice session, too bad ~ they are given the worksheets an told to catch up. If your child already knows the day’s topic, too bad ~ here are the worksheets ~ keep working.
I use a different methodology: I pretest your child and then use a two-pronged approach:
- reinforce your child’s strengths;
- focus on what your child doesn’t know.
We don’t waste time reviewing/practicing/doing worksheets of the concepts your child already knows (that’s pretty much a waste of your money!). We focus on strategies ~ strategies which encompass the whole of test-taking, not just knowing the ‘right answers’.
The most I’ve ever helped raise a student score was 7 points ~ sufficient to allow her to go from being rejected @ MU to attending.
I will not claim I can do the same for every student ~ it’s up to individual motivation/energy/background schemata/prior knowledge ~ there are a host of factors contributing to how a student scores, not the least of which is the amount of sleep the week prior to the test; what the student has eaten in the days immediately preceding the exam; hydration; and exam-room temperature.
If you’d like to further discuss this, give me a ring and we can meet or chat on the phone.
For those of you who have children in grades 10-11-12, please know that summer is the ideal time to work on SAT/ACT prep ~ there are fewer academic interferences than during the school year and we can focus in on what your child needs.
