Piano Lessons Can Benefit Everyone!

We hear music every day of our lives; we instinctively “make” music as babies, infants, toddlers and children by humming, rhyming, tapping, and even creating noises with our mouths, hands and feet. As we grow older, we discover ‘instruments’ – sometimes just a blade of grass between our fingers! When we take lessons and are able to reproduce music we’ve heard, we are amazed and full of pride. As a piano teacher since 1979, Robin wants everyone to be able to share that joy.

** New research suggests that just a few years of musical training in childhood could improve how the brain processes sound in adulthood, leading to better listening and learning skills.
** Tweens benefit from developing a habit of daily practicing, as well as a sense of self-worth when faced with challenges to be overcome.
** Teens also reap rewards from developing life-long habits, such as breaking large tasks into manageable portions, as well as exploring the link between music as expressive emotion and their own search for expression.
** Adults profit from ‘learning something new’ ~ much research has shown playing the piano helps to slow brain-aging.

New music research (Psychology Today, Dec 2012) by Jeanette Bickwell, PhD, titled “Music, Detachment and the Loss of Self”, states “Music can engage us deeply, taking us out of the world of our everyday cares and concerns…. attention is narrowed, and aspects of our surroundings recede from awareness.”
